A fireplace insert can turn a drafty, underused fireplace into a dependable heat source, but the right choice is not simply the biggest unit that fits the opening. Learning how to choose fireplace insert options starts with your home, your existing chimney, and the way you actually plan to use the room. A lake cabin used on weekends has different needs than a year-round home in Branson, Rogers, or along Table Rock Lake.

An insert is a factory-built heating appliance designed to fit within an existing masonry or approved prefabricated fireplace. It may burn wood or pellets, or it may use gas. Each option can be a good fit in the right setting. The goal is to select an appliance that heats comfortably, vents correctly, suits your routine, and can be installed according to the manufacturer’s instructions and applicable safety standards.

Start With the Fireplace and Chimney You Have

The first question is not, “Which insert looks best?” It is, “What can this fireplace and chimney safely support?” A professional inspection provides the answer.

Before an insert is selected, the firebox dimensions, hearth, facing materials, chimney height, flue condition, clearances, and access for installation should all be evaluated. An older masonry fireplace may look solid from the living room while having mortar deterioration, liner damage, water intrusion, or an improperly sized flue higher up in the chimney. These conditions are not always deal-breakers, but they can affect the scope of work and the insert choices available.

A Level 2 inspection, based on NFPA 211 guidance, is often appropriate when changing the use of a fireplace or installing a new appliance. This inspection uses a camera to examine the accessible interior of the chimney and helps identify concerns that cannot be seen from the firebox. Choose the Fuel That Fits Your Routine

Fuel type affects the experience of owning an insert as much as the heat it produces. There is no universal best option.

Wood-burning inserts

A wood insert offers the familiar sound, scent, and radiant warmth many homeowners want from a fire. Modern EPA-certified units are far more efficient than an open masonry fireplace, and a properly selected model can provide meaningful supplemental heat.

Wood heat does require a commitment. You will need dry, properly seasoned firewood, a convenient place to store it, and willingness to load the appliance and remove ash. A wood insert also needs a correctly sized stainless-steel liner that runs through the chimney to the top. The liner is not an optional upgrade - it is a critical part of the venting system and must match both the appliance and manufacturer requirements.

For homeowners who enjoy tending a fire and want heat that does not depend on electricity, wood can be an excellent choice. For a second home where nobody wants to manage firewood during a short weekend visit, another fuel may be more practical.

Gas inserts

Gas inserts provide convenient heat and a realistic flame at the touch of a switch, wall control, or remote. They are a strong choice for homeowners who want to use their fireplace more often without hauling wood or cleaning ash.

Most gas inserts use a sealed direct-vent system, which draws combustion air from outdoors and sends exhaust outside through dedicated venting. They are generally efficient zone-heating appliances, but their performance and features vary. Some models operate during a power outage using battery backup or millivolt controls, while others need household power for full operation. That distinction is worth discussing before you buy.

Gas inserts also offer wide design flexibility, from traditional log sets to contemporary firebeds. Appearance matters, but do not overlook heat output, blower noise, control options, and whether the glass-front design is suitable for young children or pets in the home.

Pellet inserts

Pellet inserts use compressed wood pellets and can provide steady, thermostat-controlled heat. They appeal to homeowners who like the renewable fuel aspect of wood but prefer more automated operation.

The trade-off is that pellet appliances require electricity to run their feed system and fans. They also need regular cleaning and dry pellet storage. For a primary residence where consistent supplemental heating is the priority, a pellet insert may make sense. For an off-grid cabin or a property that often loses power during storms, it may not be the first choice unless backup power is part of the plan.

Size the Insert for the Room, Not the Sales Floor

Oversizing is one of the most common mistakes homeowners make when selecting a fireplace insert. A large appliance can sound appealing, especially during a cold January week, but too much output for the room can make the space uncomfortably hot. With wood appliances, oversizing may also encourage low, smoldering fires that create more residue in the venting system and do not provide the cleanest burn.

The right heat output depends on the area you want to heat, ceiling height, insulation, window quality, floor plan, and whether heat can move naturally into nearby rooms. A great room with vaulted ceilings and large lake-facing windows has a different heat load than a compact family room in a well-insulated home.

Think about the insert as zone heat, not a replacement for a whole-home HVAC system unless a qualified professional has evaluated that specific goal. An insert can make the rooms where people gather noticeably more comfortable while allowing the central system to carry the rest of the house.

Look Beyond the Firebox Opening

Many homeowners measure the front opening of their fireplace and begin shopping from there. Those measurements matter, but they are only part of the picture. The height and depth inside the firebox, the width at the back, the lintel location, hearth extension, and surrounding combustible materials can all affect fit.

A gas insert may have a different depth and venting path than a wood insert. A wood insert may require a hearth that extends farther into the room or a noncombustible floor protection arrangement. Decorative surrounds can cover gaps around an insert, but they cannot correct a unit that is incompatible with the fireplace structure or clearance requirements.

This is also why online dimensions should be treated as a starting point rather than an installation plan. A site visit turns product specifications into a safe, buildable recommendation.

Consider Venting and Chimney Restoration as Part of One Project

An insert and its venting system work together. Installing a quality appliance without correcting a damaged liner, deteriorated smoke chamber, or water entry issue is rarely a long-term solution.

Depending on the inspection findings, the chimney may need a new liner, masonry repair, a smoke chamber restoration, or waterproofing work before or during installation. In some cases, specialized restoration systems can address mortar-joint or flue-surface deterioration without rebuilding an entire chimney. The appropriate option depends on the actual condition, not on a one-size-fits-all sales pitch.

Ask for a clear explanation of what the inspection found, why a particular repair is recommended, and how it supports the appliance installation. Good documentation and plain-language answers are signs that the project is being approached carefully.

Compare the Details You Will Live With

Once fuel type, size, and installation compatibility are narrowed down, compare the day-to-day details. Flame appearance, viewing area, trim style, and finish should feel at home in the room, but practical features deserve equal attention.

Consider how the controls work, whether a blower is included, how loud it is, and what maintenance the owner’s manual requires. For wood units, ask about burn times, ash handling, and loading access. For gas units, ask whether annual service is recommended and how the pilot, remote, and battery backup operate. For pellet units, understand the cleaning schedule and whether fuel is readily available near your home.

Manufacturer requirements should guide these decisions.
